Manchester Utd Legends - David Beckham

David Beckham was born in May 1975 in Leytonstone, East London. His parents were keen Man Utd fans who often travelled up to Old Trafford to watch the team play. Young Beckham was the Manchester Utd mascot in agame against West Ham in 1986.

In 1991 he signed as an apprentice for Manchester Utd. Along with Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville, he formed part of the team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1992. The side became known as 'Fergie's Fledglings'

Beckham made his United debut in 1995, a season that saw United win the double. He established himself as a right sided midfield player with a deadly accurate cross and an amazing ability to score from free kicks.

During the 96/97 campaign he scored a goal from the half way line against Wimbledon and was voted PFA Young Player Of The Year.

In 1997 Beckham inherited the No.7 shirt from Eric Cantona and during the 98/99 season he was a major part of the team that won the treble, the FA Cup, the Premier League and the European Championship. it was the first time an english club had ever achieved such success.

Beckham was instrumental in helping Man Utd to retain the Premier League tile in the 2000 - 01 season. In the last 11 games he scored 5 goals in a fantastic run of form.

United went on tho win the Premiership again the following year, the first time an English side had won the league three times in a row.

By now Beckham's relationship with manager Alex Ferguson was not a good one as Ferguson accused him of living the 'celebrity lifestyle' and 'letting down his fellow players' after he was spotted at various parties with his new wife Victoria. (Spice Girls). Despite this, Beckham scored 16 goals in 42 games during the 2001-02 season. Man Utd also went on to win the Premiership in 2002 - 03 with Beckham on top form.

In June 2003 he was awarded an OBE for his services to football. He left Manchester Utd for Real Madrid a month later but remains a firm favourite with Utd fans to this day.
